Description
These creamy, cheesy scalloped potatoes are the ultimate comfort food side dish. Thinly sliced potatoes are layered with a rich garlic-infused cream sauce and baked until golden and bubbling. Perfect for holidays, family dinners, or whenever you need a warm, satisfying dish.
Ingredients
4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 ½ teaspoons salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon paprika (optional, for topping)
1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for extra richness)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add flour and whisk until a smooth paste forms, about 1 minute.
Gradually add milk and cream, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
Add garlic, salt, and pepper. Continue to stir until thickened, 5–7 minutes.
In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
Pour half of the cream sauce over the potatoes. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
Optional: Top with shredded cheddar cheese and a sprinkle of paprika.
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 25–30 minutes, until potatoes are tender and golden brown on top.
Let rest 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
You can add sliced onions between layers for extra flavor.
Swap cheddar for gruyère or parmesan for a gourmet twist.
